How do I repair the desktop app’s playback engine?
Check Playback engine under Settings → Data & diagnostics. Remove in that row deletes the local playback dependency so it can download again when needed; Clear all local data is a different, much broader action.
Covered in this guide: FireAnime Desktop — Windows / Linux
When this repair is useful
Use this guide when FireAnime Desktop on Windows/Linux cannot prepare a playback source, or Playback engine reports an invalid installation. The app may download an extra playback component when a source first needs it. That first-time download is not an episode download.
You need internet access and enough local storage to install it again. Stop playback before removing the component. If the catalog itself does not load, first check the desktop server address.
Check the status before removing anything
- Select Settings at the bottom left of the sidebar, then Data & diagnostics.
- In the Playback engine row, choose Refresh and read the status.
- Follow the matching action:
| Status | Meaning and next action |
|---|---|
| Not installed | Not automatically a fault. Start the affected episode/source while online; the component downloads when required. |
| Installed | The component passed its installation check. Test another source or episode before assuming it is corrupt. |
| Repair available | Files exist but did not pass validation. Use the engine-only removal below. |
| Unknown or refresh fails | Try Refresh once more. If it still fails, collect diagnostics instead of clearing all data. |
Remove and download just the playback component
- Choose Remove in the Playback engine row.
- Read the confirmation and confirm only playback-engine removal. Do not choose Clear data in the separate Clear all local data row.
- Return to the episode and select the source that needed the component. Stay online while it is downloaded and prepared again.
- Return to Data & diagnostics → Playback engine → Refresh to check its state.
The interface uses these English control names in the desktop app.
What success looks like
The engine shows Installed after a source has needed it, and the affected source prepares successfully. If a different source plays without triggering installation, Not installed alone is not a failure.
If playback still does not start
- Only one episode/source fails: Follow playback troubleshooting. Reinstalling a local component cannot restore a missing online video.
- The component cannot download: Check connectivity, available storage and the exact error. Do not disable device security or install a replacement from an unknown website.
- The status returns to Repair available: In Data & diagnostics, choose View logs to inspect the recent failure or Export logs to save a diagnostic bundle. Review it before sharing; include the app version, OS, source name and time in a support request.
- You only want to free space: Engine removal is different from deleting episode downloads.
Clear all local data signs you out and resets saved accounts, server/settings and local playback progress; logs remain. It is not necessary for the engine-only procedure.
