The Daemons of the Shadow Realm Power System, Explained

Daemons of the Shadow Realm has a particular power system that stands out from other action-heavy fantasy shonen anime. While some anime in this genre emphasize elements like the type of weapon characters use or the kinds of magical spells they can cast, Daemons of the Shadow Realm’s power system feels akin to something like the tailed beasts from Naruto or the devils from Chainsaw Man in that a character’s abilities and skillset are dependent on whether they’re a Daemon wielder (someone who can control a duo of Daemons) and what their exact Daemons can do. However, there are some important rules you’ll need to know to understand this anime’s universe, especially the fights. Let’s take a look at how powers and abilities work in Daemons of the Shadow Realm.

What Are Daemons, and What Can They Do?

Daemons (who have gone by other conceptually similar names, such as ghosts, monsters, spirits, etc.) are supernatural beings with great powers who serve a particular master by protecting them from danger and following whatever orders they receive. Daemons do not merge with their masters, nor are they sealed inside of them. Instead, they are sentient beings who can move freely at will, so they often either assist their masters in battle or fight in their place, depending on their strengths and skills.

All Daemons come in pairs, so their names, appearances, and/or abilities are often associated with common or famous pair-related phrases or concepts. For example, Yuru’s Daemons are Left and Right; Asa’s Daemons are Yin and Yang; Haruo’s Daemons are Tortoise and Hare; and Hikaru’s are Black and White.

Additionally, no Daemon pairs are alike, as they all come in different shapes and sizes. Yuru’s Left and Right are humanoid powerhouses that have enormous strength (enough to take down helicopters easily) and are immune to firearms. Jin’s Ai and Makoto are fish, with one being massive and able to eat anything, while the other is tiny but can vomit anything Jin needs in combat, like weapons or flashlights. Some Daemons can even merge into a single being, such as Yin and Yang, who can become a giant four-legged monster capable of capturing both humans and Daemons in separate dimensions.

Daemons are essentially like Pokémon who need to coordinate with their masters to win fights, so what’s most important is less about how powerful a pair of Daemons is and more about how they are utilized.

Contract Between Daemons and Humans

Image

If a human wishes to acquire Daemons, they need to form a contract with them. This involves the human giving up some of their blood and placing it on the Daemons, which creates a bond between a master and their Daemons that lasts until the master’s death. This is why Daemons prioritize protecting the master’s life, especially during combat, as they become stray Daemons if the human dies before transferring them to a new master.

Stray Daemons are bound to a specific location, and if they do not find a new human to form a contract with, then they become forgotten and eventually vanish within a few decades or centuries. While the death of the master is the primary way for contracts to be broken, Asa provides an alternate method in the form of her ability, Break (more detail on this later), which allows her to destroy the contract between Yin and Yang and their original master before forming a new one between herself and the Daemon pair.

Managing Daemons During Combat

Outside of the contract between master and Daemons, no other concrete rules exist. How the involved parties interact with each other or engage in combat is entirely up to what the master personally wants. Some humans, like Jin and Haruo, prefer to have their respective Daemons, Scavenger and Tortoise and Hare, follow their orders to a T and protect them at all costs. Yuru, on the other hand, employs a much more hands-off approach with Left and Right, in which, beyond any specific orders, he does not micromanage and allows them to act as they wish as long as his main goals are achieved. This creates a more flexible relationship between Yuru and Left and Right, in which the Daemons can put their master in a compromising or vulnerable position if it helps them win fights.

However, a point that the series makes is that Daemons are not tools or weapons that humans can use however they wish. They are sentient beings with feelings and emotions, so it is in the master’s best interest to treat their Daemons fairly, as a strained relationship between the two parties can lead to disastrous consequences. For example, when Asa breaks Yin and Yang’s original contract and forms a new one with the Daemons, they quickly sell out their original master due to past mistreatment, leading to his swift defeat and capture.

Twin Powers: Asa and Yuru, Day and Night, and Break and Seal

Image

While the first three sections apply to every Daemon wielder, Asa and Yuru have additional powers and abilities unique to them due to being prophesied twins. In the show, the prophecy states, “Male and female twins born in the eastern village before and after daybreak on a day when the day and night are equal lengths will travel to the shadow realm to command Daemons.” This is why so many people in the anime want to capture Asa and Yuru, as control over the twins means direct access to the power that commands all Daemons.

Asa and Yuru are twins of day and night, so they perform best depending on what time of day it is. Since Yuru is the twin of night, he is most lethal and effective when he fights during the nighttime or in total darkness, as he can move around quickly without his enemies noticing and shoot his bow and arrow with pinpoint accuracy. Asa, on the other hand, has a strong fear of being alone in the dark and performs best when she’s fighting out in broad daylight.

However, the most prominent abilities Asa has (and Yuru will have) are Break and Seal. Break is a Daemon Asa met after dying and arriving at the border between the realms of the living and the dead. After forming a contract with them, Asa acquired the Break ability, which, as the name implies, essentially allows her to destroy or open anything, whether it be a door, a wall, a person, or a contract between other people and Daemons. Naturally, the inverse of this power is Seal, and while Yuru has yet to meet the Seal Daemon, he is destined to acquire it in the same way his sister got Break.

This pretty much covers all the core tenets of Daemon of the Shadow Realm’s power system, which is quite straightforward. That being said, there are still many mysteries and new secrets yet to come. What new Daemon-related skills and abilities will we learn that raise the stakes? Will Yuru acquire Seal by the end of this first season? We’ll soon find out as we patiently wait to watch the next weekly episode of Daemons of the Shadow Realm.
