Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island held on to the top spot for its fifth weekend from August 21–23, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha. Originally released on July 24 with a first-place debut, the film slipped to second behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day only once in its second weekend, but has since reclaimed and maintained the position for three consecutive weekends.Chiikawa the Movie grossed 1.242 billion yen (7.8 million USD) with 825,800 admissions over the weekend of August 21-23, up 39% from the previous weekend. Even though the film was in its fifth weekend of release, the box office boost likely came from the third round of audience bonuses: the "Gokigen Siren♪", pullback mini-cars available in three designs, began being distributed on August 22. During the weekend of August 7-9, when the second bonus item, "Bonbon Drop Stickers," was distributed, box office revenue also jumped by 158.5% compared to the previous weekend.
