Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island Tops 10 Billion Yen at Japan Box Office in 30 Days

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island announced on August 23 that the film's cumulative box office revenue in Japan has finally topped the 10 billion yen (62.9 million USD) milestone just 30 days after its release on July 24.As previously reported, Chiikawa the Movie reached 5 billion yen at the Japanese box office in its first 14 days, demonstrating that its momentum has barely slowed as it enters its third and fourth weekends.

The first anime feature film inspired by Nagano's Chiikawa web manga series opened in 447 theaters across Japan (382 standard theaters + 65 IMAX theaters) on July 24, 2026. Except for handing it over once to Spider-Man: Brand New Day in its second weekend (July 31–August 2), the film has taken first place in the weekend rankings three times so far.Chiikawa the Movie has now become the 21st Japanese anime film to surpass 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office.
